A Ministry of State Security employee has been sentenced to 12 months imprisonment after being convicted of extortion.

Nesbert Chinoputsa, 34, was found guilty by Harare magistrate, Noticia Shenje, after a full trial.

However, three months were suspended on condition he doesn’t commit a similar offence in the next five years.

He will serve nine months behind bars.

The court heard that between August 2019 and December 2021, Chinoputsa was approached by Brian Jackson, the director of Earthmoving Plants and Hire, seeking personal protection.

Jackson had seen some suspicious activities, which made him feel his security was compromised.

The State said Chinoputsa, instead, instilled fear into Jackson.

He told him he could be killed and the unusual activities he was experiencing would continue if he didn’t give him a car.

In October 2020, the State said Jackson gave Chinoputsa a Mazda B2200 and a Nissan Bluebird.

However, on January 7 this year, Jackson decided to report the matter to the police.

It led to Chinoputsa’s arrest and recovery of the two vehicles.

Belinda Chimuka appeared for the State.
