PINT-SIZED Zimbabwe International defender Emmanuel Jalai has been quick of the blocs in a new environment and says he is settling in well into life at South African Betway Premier Soccer League side Durban City.
There had been genuine fears that Jalai who helped Dynamos survive relegation on the domestic front last year before starring for the Warriors at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nation in Morocco, could find the going tough in the more demanding South African league where games come thick and fast.
Despite acknowledging the challenges of adapting to a new league, Jalai is happy with the way his stay has gone so far.
The 27-year-old right-back joined Durban City side in January and was immediately thrust into the South African outfit’s regular side.
He had not disappointed either.
An assuming figure, Jalai told Zimpapers Sports Hub from his base in the port city that his transition has meant more hard work from him.
But he expressed optimism about meeting the demands of the league and on his role in the team.
“I am getting used to the new environment well, I can’t complain.”
He added that the demands of the league have tested him, but he remains focused on contributing to the collective effort.
Due to his height, many tipped him to fail in a more competitive league but he has continued to defy odds staked against him.
“To be honest, it’s not easy but I am working hard to help the team. At the end, it’s about the whole team more than individualism.”
Reflecting on the differences he has noticed between the Zimbabwean and South African league since arriving, Jalai pointed to the finer aspects of the game.
“From my own opinion I think the differences are the small basic football details, whereas they are the ones which matter most in football.
“I think we just have to continue working hard and keep on having that self-belief.”
Jalai has also won the plaudits of the Durban City club officials.
The club’s administration have been charmed by the defender’s defensive qualities, consistent performances and Jalai’s leadership.
They believe he had helped in a big way to stabilise the Durban City backline.
With his international experience, Jalai who has been included on national coach Marian “Mario’’ Marinica’s squad for a Four-Nations tournament in Botswana, with the Warriors at the end of this month, is expected to continue playing a key role in the club’s upcoming fixtures.
