ZIMBABWE National Football Supporters liaison officer Simeon Jamanda has hailed the spirit displayed by the Cape Town-based Warriors supporters in the opening match of the African Nations Championship on Sunday. The Warriors got rousing support in their match against Morocco at Athlone.
A stranger could have thought that Zimbabwe were playing at home when they got their campaign off the ground in that goalless draw with the Atlas Lions.
Several Zimbabweans have relocated to South Africa in the last decade and have been looking forward for a date with coach Ian Gorowa and his band of locally based Warriors who qualified for a third straight appearance at the tournament.
“The support was tremendous and to the guys in Cape Town we want to say keep the spirit. The atmosphere was awesome on the terraces. I am sure even the guys on the field of play felt like they were playing at home.
“We are making arrangements to carry replicas and flags to South Africa so that our national colours are visible everywhere.
“It’s unfortunate we couldn’t go as planned last week but the good thing is we are now hoping to be available for the next two games, at least, to provide morale support.
“We are going in full gear and we also want to carry our musical instruments to make it even more exciting,” said Jamanda.
Jamanda is leading a group of supporters expected to leave for Cape Town this morning courtesy of sponsorship from Nyaradzo Group, who provided free transport and Zifa president Cuthbert Dube who chipped in with subsistence allowances.
Zimbabwe will meet Uganda in their next assignment on Thursday where they will be hoping for their first win to keep their chances bright in Group B.
