Japan has extended an additional US$600 000 Emergency Grant Aid to assist Zimbabweans affected by Cyclone Idai.
This support to Zimbabwe is part of the wider assistance of US$11,7 million that Japan is providing for cyclone relief efforts in the three affected countries of the region — Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe.

In a statement, the Embassy of Japan said its support will provide immediate humanitarian aid in the areas of food assistance, protection for vulnerable people, provision of shelter/non-food items, camp coordination and management, as well as early recovery.

These will be provided through the UN agencies including World Food Programme (WFP), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).

Japan said the food assistance is expected to meet the nutritional needs of 26 200 vulnerable people while also preventing further deterioration of their food sit- uation.

Japan is also planning to train 5 000 Government and NGO staff on protection of sexual exploitation and child abuse and providing sanitary kits to 15 000 children and 8 000 young mothers.

In March, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) provided emergency relief items comprising 30 generators and cord reels, 300 camp tents, 30 portable jerry cans, 30 rolls of plastic sheets, eight water purifiers and 20 000 flocculants (water treatment chemicals).

It is estimated that in Zimbabwe 270 000 people in seven districts have been affected by the cyclone, with Chimanimani and Chipinge districts being the worst affected and suffering extensive damage to homes, crops and livestock.
