HAILING from Masvingo province, Chivi-based arts ensemble Jeketera Renyaungwe is set to make their second appearance at this year’s Chibuku Neshamwari National Finals.

Jeketera Renyaungwe recently won the ticket to represent Masvingo province after outshining Dzimbadzemabwe who came in second, while Darerimwe was named third place.

Prince Mutsauki, the group spokesperson told Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub that in their four-year journey they will be appearing at the national finals for the second time this year.

He said they are raring to go as they have learnt from their past experiences.
“We started participating in the competition in 2022 where we took position two. In 2023, we managed to win at provincial level and make our first national appearance.

“In 2024 we didn’t manage to take part as we went back to the drawing board and seems it has worked as this year, we’ve managed once again to make it to the nationals and we hope to make the province proud,” said Mutsauki.

He said their vision is to use traditional dance where the ancestors communicate with the people.
“The name of our dance is Bira, which aims to invite ancestors to communicate with the people. We chose this dance because it is popular in Masvingo, particularly in our home area of Chivi. We’re proud of our win, having put significant effort into crafting a remarkable performance.”

Their group comprises 15 community members who have received technical guidance and training from Dr Phineas Magwati, a lecturer at Midlands State University who has been instrumental in guiding the group, particularly in choreography and other dance elements.

“With his expertise, we’re confident that we’ll excel this time. Dr Magwati was also the one who inspired us to form this group and provided training to its members,” said Mutsauki.

Meanwhile, Chinyambera dance ensemble, Grean Stars, emerged victorious in the Harare preliminaries of the competition held at Hurudza Beer Hall in Mabvuku this past weekend.

Grean Stars triumphed during the preliminaries, which featured more Nyau dancers who have maintained their dominance in other parts of the country.

Nyau dancers have even gained the admiration of the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe for popularising their culture. Chingwilizano Cha Achewa, known for their Malawi Nyau dance routines, finished in second place, while Pasichigare secured third.

The Harare and Masvingo groups will represent their provinces at the national finals scheduled for July 19 at the Mutare Showgrounds in Manicaland.

They join Imvimbi Arts (Matabeleland North), Katawa Dance Group (Mashonaland West), Undi Gure (Midlands), Semvumba Arts Ensemble (Manicaland), Sekusile Dance Group (Matabeleland South), and Goromonzi Arts Ensemble from Mashonaland East with other provinces yet to host their finals.
At the national finals, a prize money of US$15 000 is at stake. —@mthabisi_mthire
