Jeys breaks down on stage

Afro Jazz musician Majahawodwa “Jeys Marabini” Ndlovu shed tears while singing Ukufa, during his show at the Bulawayo Theatre, saying it reminded him of his parents and sister who died in a horrific road accident.

He performed the song off his album Jeys@40, in front of a packed auditorium on Saturday night dubbed An intimate evening with Jeys Marabini.

Addressing his fans, a tearful Jeys said the song was a sad reminder of the accident in 2011.

“This song is a dedication to my late parents and my sister who perished in a horrific accident. As a result of that we became orphans. Each time I perform this song, I become emotional,” said Jeys.

While plucking away at his acoustic guitar Jeys said after the death he became a lost soul.

“Life became tough as I’d no one to turn to but I’d like to thank God for his comfort as he gradually swept the sorrow and pain from my heart,” said Jeys.

So touching was the moment that an unidentified male fan jumped on stage and sang along. In no time he shed tears as he embraced Marabini.

Those in the audience clapped and cheered on the two, as they embraced and danced on stage.

Kick-starting the show at 7PM sharp Jeys got down to business and wasted no time belting out tunes such as Ezinyangeni, Babethi ayibulawe, Khumbul’khaya and Isilo.

Fans danced as Jeys and his band delightfully churned out tune after tune. Some of the fans would periodically jump on stage to sing along and dance with the muso.

Arts commentator Admire Kudita said the people who attended the show indicated good times for the Bulawayo artiste.

“I believe fans from this side are now starting to appreciate their own as was evidenced by the large crowd that attended the show although the fee was considered a bit high for other people,” said Kudita.

After the show Jeys said his show that cost $10 was to determine his real followers.

“I know I produce and sing quality music. In that case I’ve confidence in what I’m doing because I know the product I have and that people like it. On the other hand I wanted to know who my true fans are, who can pay to watch my live performance. I’m happy with the turn out.”
