Marabini, alongside songbird Sandra Ndebele, soccer legends Peter Ndlovu and Rahman Gumbo, was on Thursday last week appointed traffic safety ambassador by the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe.
The four were chosen due to their celebrity status in the city, which makes them ideal role models in their communities. The quartet will undergo workshops to educate them on how to address the public on traffic safety matters.
“I wish to change the way that people think when it comes to traffic safety. A lot of people have the wrong mentality when it comes to traffic safety and as someone who people look up to in society, I wish to change that,” he said.
Marabini said the statistics regarding the fatalities the country experienced during the festive season had shocked him, as he had no idea what level the problem had reached. He said he had also learnt a lot as someone who was constantly on the road, on his way to shows.
“With the increased number of cars in the country, so are the number of accidents and I was shocked when I saw the fatality statistics from the country’s roads in December. Personally I have learnt a lot because I also personally used to do dangerous things, like texting, while I was driving. From now on I wish to change that because the goal for me now is to set a good example,” he said.
Marabini said it was a personal honour for him to be appointed ambassador, as it meant that his stature had grown as a musician.
“I think the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe would not appoint someone that would drag their reputation through the mud. This shows the high regard that I am held as an artiste. For me this is a great honour and to be mentioned along the likes of Rahman and Peter is overwhelming,” he said.
