In an interview yesterday, Jeys said it was an opportunity for him to be part of an occasion to celebrate the life of a living legend, Tuku.
He said Tuku inspires him as the superstar has persevered and was patient until his time of fame came.
“Oliver has been in the music industry for so long and has been past most generations of music. The likes of Jonah Moyo, Bundu Boys and Thomas Mapfumo have come and gone but Oliver was not yet recognised. He just waited for the opportune time for him to be a legend in the Zimbabwean music industry,” said Jeys.
He said his Kozekulunge band was preparing everyday to polish their act for the show that he feels is a stepping stone in his career.
“I am happy with the preparations we have been doing so far. My career is going to another level and I am very pleased that I have been recognised by people that I can add value to a show to celebrate the life of Oliver. I am representing Bulawayo and our country and this is a good feeling,” said Jeys.
He said fans had been giving him praise for his latest album, Jeys at 40, which has sold out at record bars.
“People love my album. The CDs that I ordered have sold out at record bars. I have now ordered more CDs so that fans can buy the music. Wherever we perform, we leave the place ‘empty-handed’ because people buy all our CDs. I am pleased that my hard work is paying off,” said Jeys.
Turning to the recording of his music video, Jeys said the recording was at an advanced stage and the video would be out soon. He said the music video would be for his hit song Yamitha Kanjani.
“We have shot three scenes and we are left with two. The music video has a cast of 70 actors and dancers.
“The song is about a father who sexually abuses his daughter after the death of his wife,” said Jeys.
He said some scenes were shot in Pumula and others at the National Railways of Zimbabwe Museum.
“The video was brought about by the demand for a video by fans since the album was doing well. So I heeded the call by fans to do so. After this video I will do another one for the track Ukufa which is also popular among fans,” said Jeys.
Tuku has 60 albums and is turning 60 on 22 September. He started singing in the early 1970s and his first album, Ndipeiwo Zano was released in 1978.
Since then he has churned out 59 albums and is arguably the country’s most celebrated musician.
