Agriculture, Mechanisation and Water Resources Development Permanent Secretary Professor Obert Jiri has arrived at the venue for the two-day SADC Senior Officials Meeting on Agriculture, Food Security, Fisheries and Aquaculture.
Speaking upon arrival, Professor Jiri said the region must use the platform to craft lasting solutions to emerging climate-related challenges affecting agriculture and food production.
“This meeting comes at a time when climate change effects are becoming more pronounced across the region, and there is need for collective solutions that strengthen our food systems,” said Professor Jiri.
He added that SADC member states must work together to prepare for possible climate shocks, including the anticipated super El Niño phenomenon.
“There is talk of a super El Niño that is coming, and we need as a SADC region to be able to respond to this together so that we can assure our region of perpetual food security in the years to come,” he said.
The meeting is expected to bring together senior government officials, Heads of Delegation and development partners from across the region to deliberate on food security, agricultural transformation, fisheries and aquaculture development.
