‘Join fight against domestic violence’

POLICE in Mutare have urged churches to actively take part in the fight against domestic violence, which has been on the rise in the border town over the past few months. The call was made during a meeting held at Eastern Highlands Church in the town and was attended by church leaders from various denominations and members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP).

District chaplain, assistant inspector, Richard Nhuka said it was time to call upon the name of the Lord to help fight the spirit of violence that was rising in the city.

“The sole purpose of this meeting is to ask the church and the community at large to come together and work with the police as we try to do away with violence that has caused untold suffering in the Mutare society The city needs strong prayers from the church because it seems the spirit of violence is coming with a force so powerful that God only can intervene and help us because He is a God of peace” he said. He further emphasised that violence and murder did not solve anything, but caused pain before challenging people to seek third parties for mediation when faced with misunderstandings, while exercising self control at the same time.

“Blood spilling has become the nickname of the city after several cases of domestic violence that resulted in deaths, for instance, cases such as that of a man, who killed his wife over sadza, thieves being beaten to death and the cold blood murder of that woman who had her throat slit open by the husband. This is an issue of concern and it is not only about the police, but now it is a matter for everyone to come together and help each other reduce the figures that are raising alarm,” he added.

The police are encouraging people to seek counselling, advice and not assume things will just return to normal on their own because if this is not done, the city will lose its shine and peaceful status, he concluded.
