adminLONDON. — Jose Mourinho is willing to take a £16m pay cut to become Manchester United manager. The former Chelsea boss is desperate to take charge at Old Trafford if United sack Louis van Gaal.
The 64-year-old Dutchman is on the brink following a woeful run of six games without a win that has seen United tumble down the English Premier League and crash out of the Champions League.
Mourinho is waiting in the wings following his sacking by Chelsea last week and is prepared to accept a four-year deal worth around £6m-a-season to succeed Van Gaal.
He was the highest paid boss in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge, where he earned a staggering £10m-a-year. But he has made it clear to United he is willing to join them on similar terms to Van Gaal’s current deal in a bid to land one of the biggest jobs in world football.
A source said: “Jose is making no secret of how keen he is to take charge of United if the job becomes available.
“It is not about the money. Managing United has always been one of his ambitions because of the prestige and history associated with the club.
“He knows it would be a huge challenge, but he loves working in English football and would take a wage cut if it meant getting the chance to make United great again.”
The pressure on executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to act is building fast as United’s season threatens to unravel.
Van Gaal is under contract until the end of next season and would be due about £9m in compensation if he is shown the door. — The Daily Star.
