Joshua Mqabuko Airport to resume operations

Business Reporter.
THE Joshua Mqabuko International Airport in Bulawayo will be fully operationalised this week, the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe has said.
In a statement, CAAZ said the airport was built to match standards and characteristics of a modern airport.
“The terminal building has a capacity to handle 1,5 million passengers per year, the facility features all requisite safety systems, security systems and ambience characteristic of a modern airport,” said CAAZ.

CAAZ added that the building is a state-of-the-art facility designed to serve the interests of the flying public and the community at large. This comes after President Mugabe ordered that the airport should be opened soon. The completion of the airport was affected by major funding constraints which have seen the refurbishment project taking more than 10 years.

The upgrading of the international airport was scheduled to have been completed in December 2004.
On completion, the terminal will accommodate 400 arriving and 400 departing passengers during peak hour. The project is still undergoing its final stages of completion and these works will continue after the airport is operating. The airport, which is named after the late Vice President Dr Joshua Nkomo, is the gateway to the City of Kings and Queens as well as to World Heritage Sites, namely Khami Ruins and Matobo Hills.

It also caters for regional traffic.
