Bulawayo is set to come alive with energy, purpose and unity on April 26, 2026, when thousands of runners, walkers and community members gather for the Joshua Nkomo Peace Marathon at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST).

Organised jointly by the Joshua Nkomo Legacy Restoration Project Trust (JNLRPT) and NUST, the event seeks to harness the power of sport to promote peace, unity and healthy living, while honouring the enduring legacy of the late nationalist leader, Dr Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo.

More than just a race, the marathon is envisioned as a platform for healing, reflection and collective progress. Participants from diverse backgrounds young and old, professional athletes and casual runners will share the same roads, united by a common message of hope, reconciliation and national cohesion.

Lead Race Coordinator Talent T. Ncube said the marathon was about more than physical endurance, describing it as a journey of purpose and national renewal.

“The Joshua Nkomo Peace Marathon is not just about running kilometres; it is about running towards unity, hope and a shared national vision. Every step taken represents our collective desire for peace, resilience and progress. We want every participant to feel that they are part of something bigger than themselves a movement that celebrates life, diversity and togetherness,” said Ncube.

The race will start and finish at NUST, with participants expected to report as early as 5am for safety briefings and warm-up activities. The route passes through several landmarks closely linked to Dr Nkomo’s life and legacy, including Ekusileni Hospital, the Joshua Nkomo Museum and parts of Bulawayo’s central business district.

Organisers say the marathon aims to encourage healthy lifestyles, particularly among young people, at a time when communities are grappling with rising substance abuse and lifestyle-related health challenges.

“At a time when many young people face challenges such as drug abuse and hopelessness, this marathon offers a platform for renewal. Through sport, we can rebuild confidence, discipline and purpose, while reminding communities that unity and peace remain our strongest foundations,” Ncube said.

Several race categories will be available, ranging from a 5km fun run to the 42.2km full marathon, ensuring participation across all age groups and fitness levels. The event will also serve as a qualifying race for the internationally recognised Comrades Marathon, offering local athletes a valuable competitive opportunity.

Beyond physical fitness, organisers believe the marathon carries a deeper meaning. By bringing people together in a shared experience of effort and determination, the event seeks to strengthen community bonds, promote dialogue and reinforce Zimbabwe’s long-standing culture of peace.

Named in honour of Dr Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo, the marathon stands as a tribute to a leader whose life was defined by sacrifice, reconciliation and unity values that continue to inspire generations and shape Zimbabwe’s national identity.
