Zimbabwe’s largest integrated media house Zimbabwe Newspapers Limited 1980 (Zimpapers) reporter Ivan Zhakata has been awarded a full scholarship by the Zimbabwe Institute of Diplomacy (ZID) to undergo an intensive 10-day protocol and diplomacy training programme aimed at enhancing his skills in managing international relations.
Speaking during the announcement, ZID chairperson Dr Vivo Chikanda said the institute deliberately targets professionals from various sectors to empower them with diplomatic competencies that contribute to nation-building.
“It is our policy to choose actors in the media, in journalism and provide them with extra training to further and sharpen up their diplomatic skills in managing international relations,” said Dr Chikanda.
“This is an area where we feel we are not offering this opportunity to journalism only. We also select special people from Government ministries and offer them scholarships.”
Dr Chikanda said the programme also included participants from diverse sectors, including faith-based organisations and the security services.
“It is a way to plough back, to say, Zimbabwe, thank you for training us. We are giving back to make and create the Zimbabwe we want.”
The scholarship, valued at US$800, covers the full cost of the 10-day intensive course, which is conducted virtually via Zoom.
Expressing his gratitude, Zhakata said the programme would add depth to his journalistic work.
“I am honoured to receive this scholarship,” he said.
“As a journalist, understanding diplomacy is crucial in telling Zimbabwe’s story accurately and responsibly on the global stage. This training will not only enhance my reporting but also help me contribute to a better-informed public discourse.”
