Journalist remanded in custody for cyberbulling

JOURNALIST Gideon Madzikatidze, employed by online portal Bulawayo24.com, has been remanded in custody following his appearance yesterday at the Harare Magistrates Court.

Madzikatidze faces charges of cyberbullying and broadcasting without a licence, offences allegedly committed between December 15 and 16 last year.

He appeared before Magistrate Ms Ruth Moyo, who postponed the matter to February 23 for a bail hearing.

The charges stem from an article published on the Bulawayo24 website, titled “Geo-Pomona boss bribes journalists, editors to evade scrutiny”.

Prosecutors claim that Madzikatidze published and disseminated the article without holding the necessary internet broadcasting licence, a violation of the Broadcasting Services Act.

The complainant, Geo-Pomona Waste Management Company, is represented in court by Dorothea Moyo. The company alleges that the article was defamatory and amounted to cyberbullying.
