Government has warned the media against irresponsible reporting and peddling falsehoods about the First Family saying it will not sit back and allow irresponsible journalism which can cause instability in the country.
Addressing a Press conference in Harare last Friday, Home Affairs Minister Dr Ignatius Chombo said the integrity of the Office of the President has been severely affected by unsubstantiated stories which in most cases border on unreliable and non-existent sources.
“Let me urge you all that you have a responsibility to report truthfully, factually and avoid sensationalising stories.
“Such bad stories promote instability and they work against the good order of the country and tend to threaten national security.
“As Government we do not tolerate the peddling of falsehoods and we expect that as professional journalists you should verify your facts and write truthfully and objectively without malice. Let me warn you that if such kind of reports based on falsehoods continue to be published you will only have yourselves to blame,” he said.
Dr Chombo appealed to journalists to report truthfully using verified facts and urged them to strive to build the nation.
“As journalists, you have a responsibility to unite the nation through informing and educating the people with credible stories,” he said.
