COMMUNITIES in parts of Gwanda District, particularly in rural areas, have every reason to smile following the expansion of network coverage in their villages, as the Government takes bold steps to bridge the digital divide in line with Vision 2030.
In an interview, Deputy Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Dr Omphile Marupi — who is also the legislator for Gwanda South — said work is underway to ensure that more villagers are able to tap into the digital space.
“Following President Mnangagwa’s philosophy of leaving no one and no community behind, we are driving efforts in Gwanda South to connect our area with the rest of the world. This has led to the installation of network transmitters across Gwanda South, making it easier for people to connect.
“This includes the installation of transmitters in Mlambapheli and site marking at Buvuma, Selonga, Gungwe and Ntalale. Plans are also in place to carry out similar work in Ngoma, Samlodi and Switsha villages,” he said.
Dr Marupi said the expansion of network coverage would also support the establishment of computer laboratories in schools across the constituency.
“Access to network services will go a long way in enabling schools to offer ICT lessons aligned with modern-day curricula, helping students become globally competitive and eligible for enrolment at international learning institutions.
“With the advent of AI, learners will be able to conduct research more easily. In addition to periodic meetings with the electorate to update them on development issues, technology has made it possible to engage with Gwanda South constituents through social media groups,” he said.
Among other Government programmes being rolled out, Dr Marupi highlighted initiatives aimed at fighting crime, improving access to national documentation, and empowering communities through livestock rearing projects.
“We have rehabilitated Nhwali Rest Camp into a fully functioning Police Station. In the spirit of devolution, the centre will also serve as a registry and circuit court, allowing the community to access services locally.
“Applications have been submitted to establish six base stations across Gwanda South, with Guyu set to be upgraded. This will enhance security in the constituency and help reduce incidents such as cattle rustling and other crimes,” he said.
Dr Marupi also noted that the Zanu-PF Women’s League had sourced an incubator, which has been installed at Gwanda Old Zintec to enable the community to hatch eggs from a central location. — @mthabisi_mthire
