A 45-year-old woman appeared in court on Monday charged with illegal possession of 2,6kgs of marijuana worth ZiG78 000.
Police arrested Sazini Phiri of Cowdray Park suburb just after she disembarked from a commuter omnibus in the city centre where she was found with a cardboard box that contained marijuana wrapped in transparent plastics.
Bulawayo Regional magistrate, Mr Mark Dzira, presided over the case and is expected to deliver judgement on Friday, October 31, 2025.
Prosecuting, Mr Jethro Mada said allegations are that on October 30 at around 12AM police detectives received a tip off to the effect that Phiri was in possession of drugs heading to town from Cowdray Park.
Equipped with that information, the detectives intercepted the said commuter omnibus at TM Hyper where Phiri disembarked carrying a plastic bag.
“The detectives introduced themselves to the accused person by producing police identity cards and the purpose of their visit.
The accused person was asked to open her plastic bag and inside was a small sealed cardboard box,” said Mr Mada.
The court further heard that the box was opened and two transparent plastic papers containing dagga were recovered and Phiri was requested to produce a permit or license, which allows her to be in such possession and she failed leading to her arrest.
“Further searches were made at the accused’s place of residence where two sealed transparent plastic papers and two black paper bags containing loose dagga were recovered stashed in a white small plastic container, which was in her yard,” said Mr Mada.
The recovered loose dagga was taken to Bulawayo Main Post Office where it was weighed to 2,6kgs in the presence of the accused.
