The year 2011 saw the re-introduction of long forgotten jumpsuits that made waves back in the 1940s and Bulawayo women have shown that they are always abreast with the latest fashion trends.
Like all other fashion trends, they have evolved and are rocking the fashion scene all over the world.
Jumpsuits come in different shapes, sizes and materials.
Jumpsuits are handy as they are suitable for several occasions depending on accessories for the day.
Saturday Leisure conducted a snap survey in the city to check on the latest fashion trend and how people view it.
Fashion enthusiast Fungai of Blance Hair Salon said jumpsuits are a must-have for ladies as they are handy.
“Jumpsuits are very handy as they can be worn at different occasions such as weddings, parties, braais, picnics and sports. It is the accessories that you wear them with that make them suitable for an occasion,” said Fungai.
She said they can be worn with any footwear depending on the occasion.
“As they are suitable for any occasion any footwear is applicable, one can wear them with heels for a formal occasion or evening wear, sneakers for sports and sandals or pumps for casual wear,” she said.
Nobuhle Ncube, a student at Bulawayo Polytechnic who was spotting one, said the secret to carrying the item well is it should be just a perfect fit.
“Jumpsuits should not be too tight nor too loose, they must be a perfect fit,” she said.
“Short ones are most suitable at clubs or pubs at night worn especially with heels,” said Ncube.
However, a number of men in the city expressed mixed feelings on the fashion trend.
Mthulisi Moyo, a barber at a city salon, said he does not understand the trend and their rightful occasion.
“Some women just put on these so-called jumpsuits, but it does not even suit them or their bodies.
“It is just like leggings, they have a certain type of people they fit, but all women just put them on as a fashion statement,” he said.
One Moses Mutasa said fat women looked “disastrous” when putting on the jumpsuits.
“Izidudla kazifithwa, they must not wear them at all, especially those that have T-shirting material, as it looks horrible, because it exposes some of their body bumps,” said Mutasa.
A snap survey at fashion boutiques in the city showed that they are affordable, which means both the rich and poor can afford them.
Like blue jeans, the jumpsuit has humble beginnings as work wear, but has been elevated to the realm of high fashion.
Jumpsuits can be totally sexy when you wear them right: not too tight with minimal accessories.
There are several ways in which a jumpsuit can be worn. One can wear it instead of a cocktail dress. If you treat it like a little black dress, it can be one of the most versatile items in your wardrobe.
If you are not comfortable baring everything, adding a belt or a blazer is the perfect way to help break up the look.
It’s a fashion crime to wear a head-to-toe patterned jumpsuit. Most fashionable people do wear a floral top and floral pants at the same time, the same follows for all-floral jumpsuits.
Keep the 80s where they belong in the past and make this look modern by choosing solid colours, sophisticated fabrics, and an evening-appropriate aesthetic.
