In an interview with Bloomberg Television correspondent Ryan Chilcote at the World Economic Forum on Africa meetings this morning, PM Tsvangirai said free and fair elections would only be possible after political, media and security reforms are held, contrary to widely held views that Zimbabwe was ripe for elections.
PM Tsvangirai said after June 29 Zimbabwe would still have four months within which to hold elections though President Mugabe has repeatedly said elections should be held by June 29 when Parliament is dissolved.
“Zimbabwe will be ready for elections anytime after June 29. We have to ensure that the necessary political and legal reforms are in place.
“Zimbabwe must be able to resolve this political crisis. Are we able to do it? Yes with political will it can be done,” he said.
The programme, an Insight, An Idea with Morgan Tsvangirai was attended by scores of journalists attending the WEF and was beamed live on television.
During the interview PM Tsvangirai said his recent abortive regional tour had been aimed at ensuring that Sadc would buy into his story and force President Mugabe to delay the elections.
“Zimbabwe is already under curatorship of Sadc and the AU over the last few years. The end must therefore be managed satisfactorily,” he said.
PM Tsvangirai described his relations with President Mugabe as cordial saying they had progressed from being confrontational to amicable.
“We are political opponents and not enemies. All we want is what is best for Zimbabwe. He drives his position very hard and I also drive my position very hard.
“We meet every Monday and also Tuesday in Cabinet and I also contact him anytime when there is a need.”
Today is the last day of the WEF meeting that began here on Wednesday.
