SENIOR athletes recorded poor times at the Bulawayo Athletics Board (BAB) track and field competitions held at White City Stadium yesterday.
Kenneth Chibwana won the senior men 100m in 10,90 seconds while Nkosilathi Ndlovu was second in 11,27 seconds which is below standard.
Top three junior men athletes clocked better times compared to the seniors in the same race.
Hwange-based athlete Valentious Shoko clocked 10,59 seconds while Chris Tadu was second in 10,61 seconds and Evidence Dambo came third in 10,74 seconds.
The youngsters had a fine display in high jump as well, as Gwanda athletes Sydney Nyoni recorded 1,85metres in the junior boys’ category.
In the senior men Arshall Mukarati of Juma Phiri Academy recorded 1,70m to win the category but fell behind Nyoni with 15cm.
Nyasha Charandura Academy athlete Rachel Ngwarai won the senior women 200m race in 25,60 seconds with Canon Chashamba coming second in 26,00 seconds.
Saneliwe Ndlovu of How Mine Athletics club won the 200m junior girls’ event in 29,21 seconds while Amkela Ndlovu came second in 30,71 seconds.
Renowned Bulawayo youngsters Yvonne Vanhuvaone, Linet Furera, Andile Khumalo and Patience Gurure watched from the terraces as they were given time to rest following Friday’s Nash championships held at Nust at which they both won gold medals.
BAB chairman Manuel Mpofu said yesterday’s attendance was excellent and athletes showed the zeal to compete.
“The event was good and the clubs came in numbers even the athletes themselves showed the zeal to excel, which is a good sign that athletics is heading in the right direction,” said Mpofu.
However, athletes blamed the use of the cinder track for the failure to clock good times. The rains also affected action as the track became slippery.
