Junior councillors begin two-day governance induction

JUNIOR councillors from Gwanda Municipality and Gwanda Rural District Council are undergoing a two-day induction training where they will be capacitated with knowledge and skills to equip them for service.

The induction training which started on Thursday is being held under the theme “Youth driven governance- Benchmarking Service Delivery Towards the Attainment of Vision 2030”. It is being held at the Gwanda Municipality chambers.

The training is being facilitated by the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works youth desk. The main objective the junior councillor induction program is to equip new junior councillors with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively fulfil their duties and responsibilities, including understanding local government systems, policies, and procedures, as well as their role in representing the community.

Gwanda municipality has 12 junior councilors while Gwanda RDC has 24 junior councilors. Topics that will be tackled uring the induction programme include leadership, roles and responsibilities of junior councillors in local governance, overview of council and council committees. Junior councilors will also be educated on child rights and youth rights, leadership and inclusivity, drug and substance abuse, grooming etiquette and junior councilors code of conduct among others.

On the second day of the induction executive committees for both local authorities will be selected. These comprise of the mayor, deputy mayor, town clerk, chamber secretary and three committee chairpersons.
