Junior golfers dominate club champs

ZIMBABWEAN golfers, who booked a place for the Toyota World Junior Golf championships in Zambia recently, continue to impress on the domestic scene.

The team’s members, Kiren Vincent, Stuart Krog and Jack Allard, all managed to win their club championships at the weekend.

The Toyota World Junior Golf Championship, set for Nagoya in Japan, will feature the Zimbabwe juniors, who came second at the All-Africa Junior Golf Challenge at the Lusaka Golf Club in Zambia.

Vincent, a member at Royal Harare, won his club championship title.

At Chapman, Krog – the country’s leading amateur – was in his own class as he won his club’s championship title.

At Bulawayo Golf Club, Allard shows his class as he beat Ivan Nembawari in the battle for the club championship.

Mathew Williams was the defending champion.

Steve Hazangwi successfully defended his title at Warren Hills.

Hazangwi, playing off two handicap, beat his perennial rival, Bin Hassim, by a single shot after the 54-holes.

Meanwhile, on the USPGA Tour, Brendon de Jonge recovered made the cut at the Players Championships at TPC Sawgrass, Ponte Vedra Beach, in Florida.

This was his 14th of the season in 17 events.

After starting with a one-over-par 73, the burly Zimbabwean returned with 71 in the second round to make the cut in the $10 million event.

The tournament was won by Rick Fowler of the United States after a dramatic play-off.
