ZIMBABWE’S rising golf stars are chasing a dream, and it tees off this week in Tunisia.
The country’s top junior golfers are primed for battle at the 2025 All Africa Junior Golf Championship, which runs from today to Saturday at The Residence Golf Course in Gammarth, Tunis. This highly anticipated continental showdown isn’t just about pride; it’s a gateway to the global stage. The top two teams in both the boys’ and girls’ categories will book their tickets to the Toyota Junior Golf World Cup in Japan this June.
Zimbabwe’s girls’ team features the talented trio of Miriam Masiya, Zarina Makwarimba, and Lily Ascott, accompanied by Zimbabwe Ladies Golf Union (ZLGU) president Olivia Nyamwanza. The boys’ team includes Tanaka Chatora, Tawana Mangoma, Brydon Amm, and Tom Sinclair, with Patrick Mangwiro leading the delegation.
The tournament’s official practice round and opening ceremony take place today, while the Championship rounds run from Thursday through Saturday, followed by the closing ceremony. The Zimbabwe contingent will depart Tunisia on Sunday.
Speaking to Zimpapers Sports Hub, ZLGU president Olivia Nyamwanza expressed confidence in the team’s preparation and potential to secure a podium finish.
“The team has been training under the tutelage of coach Simon Murungweni, assisted by Jessie Nyakatawa, for the past three months.
“Every resource has been poured into this preparation and all that is left is to secure the trophy. As we carry the flag, the support given to the ZLGU is greatly appreciated. We cannot do it without you. Thank you for your support, always,” said Nyamwanza.
Nyamwanza said the girls were particularly motivated and confident after months of intense training.
“They are buoyed by the training they have received and are enthusiastic to better their position. We believe we have a strong chance of getting a top finish, that’s exactly what we’ve been working on.”
She also revealed the girls have been actively participating in World Amateur Ranking tournaments at home as part of their build-up to the African championship.
Zimbabwe will face stiff competition from some of the continent’s golf powerhouses, including South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, Namibia, Uganda, Mauritius, Algeria, Egypt, Zambia, Botswana, Tanzania, and hosts Tunisia. The hosts have already assured visiting teams of their “full commitment to ensuring the success of this important sporting event.”
