Junior tennis players meet at Harare Open

are battling it out in another tournament. Participants will fight for honours in the Under-10, Under-12, Under-14, Under-16 and Under-18 age groups.

Tournament director, Martin Dzuwa, said preparations for the event have been going on well and they are ready to host the event with registration already underway.
“It’s a four-day tournament and it’s a national ranking tournament. The kids who are going to play in it will be ranked at national level. We have opened the entries and those interested can come to Harare Sport Club and the closing date is April 17,” said Dzuwa.

Dzuwa said the tournament is part of the junior development programme with Masvingo and Bulawayo hosting their own tournaments.
The national association is seeking to decentralise their development programmes.

“This is part of development because there are three tournaments already that have been held, the first one was in Masvingo and Bulawayo had two tournaments, the other one is in progress.

“This is the fourth and it’s good for our junior players because we have always said there are few tournaments. There will be the Zimbabwe Closed after the Harare Open.
“That will increase the level of play of our players and we hope this continues when they open schools. We don’t have to wait for the school holidays only to have such events,” said Dzuwa.

The veteran player, who is also a coach, said they were looking forward to a competitive tournament as players fight for points to improve their national rankings which will increase their opportunities of being selected into the national teams.
