ZIMBABWE’S Under-15 team suffered a 5-3 defeat to the Republic of Ireland and then recovered to beat Montenegro 4-1 in their third group match at the inaugural FIFA U-15 World Cup and Festival in Baku, Azerbaijan on Sunday.

There were huge positives to draw from the performance.

The Junior Warriors matched their opponents technically and tactically, displaying confidence and a fighting spirit under coach Backlyfield Chivenga.

In the first match, they came from behind three times before taking the lead, but Ireland fought back to claim victory.

Munanawashe Bote scored a brace, while

Ngoni Tombo scored the third goal, but it was all in vain.

Ireland opened the scoring in the 10th minute, only for Zimbabwe to equalise five minutes later.

The Junior Warriors conceded again shortly after the restart before levelling the scores in the 24th minute and taking the lead four minutes later.

However, Ireland scored two quick goals from free headers to regain the advantage before capitalising on a defensive error to complete the scoring.

The match ended in a show of sportsmanship, with players and coaches from both teams embracing.

In the second match, Ngoni Tombo scored a hat-trick while Dylan Matsheza scored the other goal.

The FIFA U-15 World Cup and Festival prioritises enjoyment and development, giving young players an opportunity to learn the game in a less pressurised environment.

The Junior Warriors will face Nicaragua and England in their remaining group fixtures.
