Juru elected Africa Directors vice chair

THE Institute of Directors Zimbabwe (IoDZ) chairman Dr Mike Juru has been elected vice chairman of the Institute of Directors Africa chairs forum.

Dr Juru who is founder and chief executive officer of Integrated Properties, was voted into the position during elections held virtually last Friday.

Institute of Directors Africa is an organisation that aims to promote excellence, inventiveness, integrity, and ethical behaviour in entrepreneurs, directors, and managers across all sectors to raise standards of corporate governance and best practices across Africa.

Rockson Dogbegah, the president of Institute of Directors Ghana was elected inaugural chairman while Victoria Silutongwe who is Institute of Directors Zambia past president was elected secretary.

The new leadership was given a two-year mandate to realign the governance structures, grow the institute’s network, create synergies, and enhance the organisation’s impact across Africa. 

In a statement, the Institute of Directors Zimbabwe said the election of Dr Juru would be of great value to Zimbabwe, as he would tap from broad knowledge of company executives at continental level.

“IoDZ is excited with the election of Dr Juru and wish him all the best as it is looking forward to Zimbabwe benefitting from the exposure and active involvement and hope that the organisation will remain focused on developing leadership that enhances economic growth on the continent through sound corporate governance practices,” said IoDZ.

The chairs forum is composed of current and past presidents of member country organizations of the Africa Corporate Governance Network (ACGN), which represents over 20 500 senior executives and directors in Africa.

ACGN was founded in 2013 to develop the institutional capacity of its members and to enhance effective corporate governance practices towards building better private and public sector organisations and corporate citizens in Africa.

The organisation has the support of the World Bank and International Finance Corporation.

Presently, ACGN is crafting a standard continental code of corporate gxovernance and aims to expand the code to incorporate Sector-Specific Codes.

The Institute of Directors Zimbabwe is a founding member of ACGN and is formulating sector-specific principles for Zimbabwe, feeding into the continental Code.

IoDZ is a strategic partner in forming the Zimbabwean National Code adapted to create the Public Entities Corporate Governance Act.

According to the International Monetary Fund, Africa will host seven of the top ten fastest-growing economies in the world in the next five years

With the current focus on growth and development in Africa, good corporate governance and capacity building is crucial. In that regard, the Chairs Forum appointment could not have come at a better time.

The Institute of Directors Zimbabwe is a non-political, non-profit and professional membership organization that believes corporate governance is a prerequisite for a vibrant economy.
