JUST IN: Former Manama High school students fund-raise for hospital repairs

FORMER Manama High School students have set up a fundraising committee to complement Government efforts in raising funds for repairs at Manama Mission Hospital where infrastructure and buildings were extensively damaged by a violent storm.

Roofs of several wards that include the maternity ward were blown off following heavy rains accompanied by strong winds early this month.

The repair work is expected to start early next month after Government availed $8 million through the Civil Protection Unit (CPU) and the Ministry of Health and Child Care.

The strong winds and heavy rains also left the hospital without electricity after solar panels were damaged. Water tanks and telecommunications cables were also damaged resulting in the suspension of critical services.

The suspended services include the expanded programme of immunisation (EPI), maternity delivery services, postnatal care services, isolation of Covid-19 positive mothers, antenatal care services and integrated management of neonatal, childhood illnesses (IMNCI) and mortuary services.

Fundraising coordinator of the former Manama High School students Dr Omphile Marupi said they had so far mobilised US$3 000 and $100 000 for the repairs. Some well-wishers also donated roofing material, maternity linen and PPEs, while others have offered free labour.

“We were touched by the disaster that struck Manama Mission Hospital, which holds a sentimental value to us as former students. We therefore decided to team up and mobilise resources for the hospital repairs to complement Government efforts,” he said.

Dr Marupi said donations are continuing to pour from well-wishers based locally and abroad.
