JUST IN: One dies and 23 others test positive for Covid-19

THE country recorded one more death and 23 new cases of Covid-19 in the last 24-hour cycle bringing the total number of cases to 38 595.

All new cases are local transmissions while the death was reported in Bulawayo which also had the highest number of new cases after 11 people tested positive yesterday.

Midlands had four new cases, Matabeleland North three, Harare two while Manicaland, Mashonaland Central and Matabeleland South had one each.

Masvingo, Mashonaland East and Mashonaland West did not record any new cases yesterday.

The seven-day rolling average for new cases rises to 21 from 20 yesterday.

A total of 2 154 PCR tests were done and positivity was one percent.

There were 22 new recoveries and the National Recovery Rate stands at 94.2 percent while active cases remain at 641.

“As of18 May 2021, Zimbabwe has recorded 38 595 confirmed cases including 36 371 recoveries and 1 583 deaths,” said the Ministry of Health and Child Care in a daily update report.

The vaccination programme is continuing countrywide as Zimbabwe surpassed the 600 000 mark for people who have received the first dose.

Yesterday, 8 772 received their first dose, taking the total number of citizens who have received their first dose to 600 579.

Those who received the second dose yesterday were 8 925 bringing the total for second dose to 231 375 as at 4PM yesterday.

The Ministry said as of 17 May 2021, at 3PM there were 28 hospitalised cases and three were asymptomatic while 18 had mild to moderate symptoms, five were severe and two were in the intensive care units. – @ncubeleon
