GOVERNMENT has engaged a contractor to restore access to the Mola community which was cut off from the rest of the country following landslides caused by heavy rains last week.
The heavy rains also washed away at least 38 homesteads, killing two people in the process and spawning a humanitarian crisis as affected communities in Kariba’s Nyaminyami area lost food and household goods.
Forit Contracting –is now on site clearing the debris that rendered access to Nyaminyami Rural District Council Ward 3, through Ndepa Escarpment along the Matusadona Mountain range impossible.
Assistant district development coordinator Mr Witness Kufa confirmed the development adding that foodstuffs and other necessities were being mobilised for the affected communities.
“The contractor is now on site and work has begun to ensure that we have access to Mola,” said Mr Kufa.
“This will allow the Kariba district civil protection unit to provide relief to the affected communities. Some of them had houses swept away by the heavy rains.”
Initially those affected were housed at schools but they have since been integrated into the community.
