THE Zimbabwe amateur golf team found the tough going at three South African Golf Invitational tournaments whose curtain comes down today.
The Zimbabwe Golf Association had sent four top players who included two juniors and two amateurs for the events that were held across three golf courses from February 4.
The team, made up of junior players Keegan Shutt and Michael Wallace as well as Mathew Campbell and Bradley Kulaisi, was outplayed by the South Africans in all the events as they failed to make the cut.
The opening event saw former Chapman-based 14-year-old Shutt finish at a distant position 69 with Campbell placed 92, Wallace 98 and Kulaisi second from last on 101 as they all missed the cut
In the second event, the Africa Championship at Leopard Creek Country Club, Shutt was the best-placed Zimbabwean golfer on position 74 as Kulaisi was on position 83 slot ahead of fellow countryman Campbell on 84 as Wallace was on position 87.
The Zimbabwe Golf Association vice-president, Martin Chikwanha, said the tournament was good for the players as it gave them the much-needed international exposure.
“I think with more than eight international countries and Zimbabwe being the only other team from Africa, it is good exposure for the young players. There are representatives of England, Sweden, the Netherlands, Scotland and Ireland, among several other European countries, so the competition is stiff,” he said.
