JUST IN: Zimbabweans doing well in ITF Under-18 tourney

THE Zimbabwean trio of Benedict Badza, Lyle Zaloumis and Ethan Sibanda have qualified for the quarter-finals of the boys’ ITF Under-18 second-leg tournament currently underway at Bulawayo Country Club.

Second round action took centre stage on Wednesday, with players battling for berths in the quarter-finals.

Badza beat Namibian Daniel Jauss 6-3, 6-2 and Zaloumis overcame the challenge of Namibian George Louw 6-2, 7-6 to also proceed to the next round.

Badza will now face top seed Andreas Scott, while Zaloumis squares off with fourth seed Benjamin Scott.

Second seed and tournament favourite Sibanda beat Zamani Moyo 6-1, 6-4 to book a quarter final date against South African Yarona Morule.

In the girl’s division, Tungamirai, Tadiwanashe Mauchi, Chelsea Chakanyuka and Tanyaradzwa Midzi all sailed through to the quarter-finals.

Midzi over powered 13-year-old Kudzai Chapepa, 6-1, 6-0.

Chakanyuka beat Nicole Matukutire 7-5, 3-0, while Mauchi eased past South African Sophia Fuller 6-1, 6-1.

Tungamirai did not have it easy against Indian Diya Tamse, but she emerged victorious after three sets 6-4, 6-4, 5-7.
