RISING discus thrower Kimberly Kachambwa continues to shine as she picked a gold medal at the Southern Region Senior Athletics Championships over the weekend at the University of Zimbabwe.
The 18-year-old was one of the many juniors that were roped into the 60-member Zimbabwean team for the meet that featured Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles and Zambia.
From representing the country at the African Union Sports Council Region 5 Youth Games early this month in Namibia to the Confederation of African Athletics Combined Under-18/Under-20 Championships in Nigeria, and finally her debut at the regional senior championships, Kachambwa is grateful for the opportunity.
“I was very happy considering this is a senior championship. I did not expect to win a gold. I wanted to get a PB. But I am very thankful that I managed to get a gold.
“The competition was quite interesting. It was also stiff but also manageable this time considering I was in Nigeria.
“Nigeria it was a different case. From Nigeria I realised that I panic too much but this time I managed to do mental rehearsal, being able to analyse things before I throw first, and it was very helpful.”
Kachambwa takes a break before she resumes preparation for next season.
“It’s now time to rest and start training again for future competitions.
“I feel happy, I am very grateful considering that I am very tired right now from the past Games but I am very grateful and all the glory goes to God after all,” said Kachambwa.
She got a bronze medal at the AUSC Region 5 Youth Games and in Nigeria she placed seventh.
