A 44-YEAR-OLD man from Kadoma, Panganai Mutize, has been convicted and sentenced to an effective eight-month jail term

for culpable homicide.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe, the Chegutu Magistrates’ Court heard that on November 1,

2024, at around 6 pm, Mutize was speeding along the Harare-Bulawayo highway towards Chegutu. He lost control of his

vehicle and it veered off the road, and struck a pedestrian.

The victim succumbed to their injuries upon admission to the hospital. In its ruling, the court sentenced Mutize to 13 months in

prison.

However, five months of the sentence were suspended for five years, on condition that he does not commit a similar offence

during that time.

This leaves an effective prison term of eight months. Additionally, Mutize has been banned from driving for three months.

“Negligent driving continues to be a menace on our roads, leading to the loss of lives,” the NPA said.

“The criminal justice system has a duty to protect all road users by punishing reckless drivers.”
