KADOMA has recorded its first cholera death.

Acting director of health and environment services, Sarah Temwanjira, told a full council meeting that they have established a cholera treatment unit.

The patients are admitted to Queen Mary Hospital.

“We have established a cholera treatment unit there. Another centre is earmarked for Ingezi as it is the suburb with the most cholera patients so far,” said Temwanjira.

A treatment unit holds up to 10 patients and when there are more numbers, authorities are mandated to establish a treatment centre.

The Council has also launched free diarrhoeal treatment for residents.

“We have oral rehydration sachets that are being distributed by health workers.

“These are intended for anyone who would have contracted the disease before they get to a health centre.

“A public education campaign is also ongoing,” she said.

The Council said it is disheartening to note that some residents continue to sell food under unhygienic conditions regardless of the dangers involved.

It said strict measures against this practice would be taken in order to prevent the spread of cholera and other diseases.

Residents have been urged to practice good hygiene, includinga regular hand washing, proper food handling and disposal of waste in designated areas.
