THREE men who went on a robbery spree in Kadoma armed with axes, knives and iron bars have been sentenced to a combined 70 years in prison.

Misheck Mutetwa (30), Lordshare Chimanya (29) and Kudakwashe Mapfiravana (27) were convicted by Kadoma Regional Magistrate Mr Nicholas Mupeiwa on Monday.

According to Criminal Investigations Department national spokesperson Detective Inspector Rachel Muteweri, the convictions stem from a series of robberies committed in Kadoma on April 29.

The three, together with an accomplice who is still at large, Jimmy Mutetwa, allegedly went on a robbery spree armed with knives, axes and iron bars.

“The gang first targeted a tuck-shop owner, where they broke down the door and stole cash. They subsequently proceeded to another victim’s residence, where they forcibly broke the door before gaining entry into the house. The suspects stole cash, cellphones, a laptop, car keys, among other valuables,” said Det Insp Muteweri.

She said in one of the robberies, the gang got away with US$1 000 cash, cellphones, a laptop and car keys.

“On April 30, detectives from CID Kadoma received information linking the suspects to the commission of the robbery cases. Acting swiftly on the information, the detectives arrested the three suspects,” said Det Insp Muteweri.

Following their arrest, detectives recovered two laptops, a pellet gun and various cellphones.

Mutetwa was sentenced to 30 years in prison, while Chimanya and Mapfiravana were each sentenced to 20 years.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is now appealing for information that may lead to the arrest of the outstanding suspect, Mutetwa,” said Det Insp Muteweri.
