‘Kalawa strong’

Directors of Kalawa Jazmee, one of Africa’s biggest independent record labels, have assured their followers that all is not broken in the music stable which was recently marred by clashes of artistic egos. Last month, one of Kalawa’s artistes’, Professor was reported to be unhappy with the happenings in the stable and was said to have threatened to leave.

But, Kalawa Jazmee, a stable which was instrumental in developing Kwaito music in South Africa, said like any other music stable, theirs had its ups and downs. The stable turned 21 on Saturday.

“Kalawa is still going strong. There’ll always be disagreements on the direction the company is taking — but we always reach an amicable decision.

“And we’re all on good terms,” said one of the directors, Bruce “Dope” Sebitlo.

A statement released by the stable revealed that the Kalawa board resoundingly supported another director — Mandla “Spikiri” Mofokeng’s decision to set up his Spikiri Entertainment imprint that came after consultations.

“We fully support him and his idea to focus on the kwaito revolution. We allow others to grow and the need for brands to grow, hence we’ve had 21 years of success,” Sebitlo said.

One of their directors Zhynne “Mahoota” Sibika told Daily Sun that there were people who pretend to be Kalawa friends but have bad intentions as they spread rumours to try and destroy the company. He went on to state that the Kalawa directors knew who was spreading rumours in an attempt to pit them against each other.

“We’ve investigated this and know who they’re, but they don’t even deserve to be named,” said Mahoota.

Responding to a rumour that the bosses are competing with artistes in the company, Mahoota said: “We can’t be competing with our artistes, as this company was formed by different artistes for the artistes in the industry.” – Showbiz Reporter/DailySun.
