KAMBUCHA Drink founder, Francis Niyonsaba, is using football to help in the fight against drug abuse in Mbare.
He launched an Under-14 football tournament in the area on Sunday.
The event was graced by legendary commentator, Charles “CNN” Mabika, who was also the guest speaker.
Mabika grew up in Mbare where one of his close friends was legendary footballer, Stanford “Stix” Mtizwa.
At least, US$5000 was invested in this youth tournament and it attracted a huge crowd. Zimdancehall chanter, Seh Calaz, who is from Mbare, is the company’s brand ambassador.
Niyonsaba is also known as Dr Kambucha and he is originally from Uganda. He said Mbare was his first home when he relocated to Zimbabwe and he was ready to put everything on the line to help fight drug abuse in the area.
“It hurts to see the youths perishing because of something which can be avoided,” said the businessman.
“These youths are vulnerable to drugs because they don’t have people who are supporting their dreams and being unoccupied is also a big problem on its own.
“So, we decided to do something that can help these youths to realise their dreams and we are grateful to everyone who came to support this initiative.”
He explained the reason behind Seh Calaz appointment as the brand ambassador.
“I think we have a similar drive to give back to our community,” he said.
“He is someone who is unapologetic about being from Mbare and I believe he has motivated a lot of youths.
“Calaz did a free song for me, without asking anything in return, and when I heard the song, I reached out to his camp and offered him this job and I’m happy he accepted it.
“We are aiming to take this initiative in every city because drugs are not only affecting the youths here in Mbare but everywhere.
“We opted to start from where we came from. There is more to come and it’s a campaign which we cannot afford to abandon.”
Kambucha’s managing director, Willard Chinguwa, said Mbare deserves recognition and support from the company because it helped in spreading the word about their product.
