ZIMBABWE Karate Union vice president Wilfred Mashaya has described the late Mugove Muhambi as a unifier and an inspiration to many.

The renowned karateka and fitness trainer died on Saturday following a tragic road accident along Borrowdale Road.

He was 48.

“Sensei Mugo is one of the people who inspired not only me but a lot of people.

“I feel a void, we were so close to each other; we were like brothers, we were like a family.

“I feel I have lost a brother, I have lost a motivator, I have lost someone who inspired me.

“He was a loving person, a unifier . . . I loved his humility. He was so humble. To me he is a legend, he is a hero, we learnt a lot from him, even young children learnt a lot from him,” said Mashaya.

During his competitive days, he won several national championships, and represented Zimbabwe at regional and international events, raising the country’s flag high.

After retiring from competing, Mugove found himself in administration following his election as Zimbabwe Karate Union vice-president in 2016 and up to 2020.

“He contributed a lot in sport. He was a multi-champion here in Zimbabwe; regionally, he was a champion, and internationally, he used to represent Zimbabwe and won medals for the country.

“But we cherish the great moments and the contributions that he made to our society in terms of training and grooming kids and adults and contributing to fitness and wellness in this era where fitness and wellness has become very important,” said Mashaya.

Veteran karateka Samson Muripo shared his journey with Muhambi.

“I am deeply impacted by the loss of Sensei Mugove Muhambi.

“I shared a great history with Sensei Mugove Muhambi, dating back to 1998 at the Body Fitness Centre Dojo under Shihan Tendayi Marange, where we trained together.

“The Kyokushin Karate community shares a bond that goes beyond mere acquaintances, built on mutual respect, discipline, and support. We were brothers for life due to that connection.

“His legacy, the lessons he taught, and the lives he touched will undoubtedly continue to inspire and motivate others.

Reigning Mr Zimbabwe champion Gideon Teguru, who worked with Muhambi, said, “He was a good coach and he used to share everything he knew about sport and fitness.

Mourners are gathered at number 32 Appel Avenue, Saint Martins. Muhambi is survived by his wife, Vimbai and four children.
