THE Zimbabwe Karate Union is set to send 10 participants for the World Junior and Cadet Championships to be held in Guadalajara, Spain early next month.
The championships are pencilled for November 7 to 10 with the junior karatekas taking part in kata and kumite events.
The competition is catering for karatekas aged either 16 or below Zimbabwe are hoping to compete in the championships for the first time.
ZKU president, Joe Rugwete, said they have so far managed to get six tickets for the team and are also hoping send some of officials to attend a referees and coach’s course to be held during the event.
“We are in preparation for the Spain championships and it’s for the juniors but the challenge is the timing because some of our children are writing exams so we dropped some of the members from the squad.
“We have a team of 10 athletes and we intend to also send a couple of officials to do a referees’ and coaches’ course.
“We have six tickets and we will priorities the athletes, in the case we don’t get sponsorship we will send five fighters and at least one official,” said Rugwete.
Rugwete said they also need about US$10 000 to pay the national association’s outstanding affiliation fees to the World Karate Federation.
