AN eight-year-old girl from Karoi’s K14 area, a new suburb in the town, was seriously injured on her leg after she was attacked by a jackal recently.

The attack occurred while the girl was sleeping inside the house at night.

Speaking at a full council meeting today, Karoi Ward 8 councillor, Lloyd Chasara said the incident raises concerns of how poor lighting across the town threatens lives.

Council has since procurred 700 solar street lights, that now await installation.

Said Clr Chasara: “We want the solar street lights to be distributed equally and fairly. Every community is under threat while priority has been given to Chilangwe and Chiedza due to muggings and robberies, we have areas where people aren’t safe from animals.

“Recently, an eight-year-old girl was lucky to be alive after a jackal entered a room she was sleeping in at night. It took the efforts of neighbours to kill the animal.”

Ward 9 councillor, Mr Muzondiwa Sawanje concurred adding that while the council was playing its part in installing solar street lights, the move was perceived as a donation to thieves who within a week, vandalise and steel the lights.

“Lets instal these lights at houses and give responsibility to house owners. This is the only way to protect the lights,” he said.

Karoi Mayor, Elderman Kudakwashe Chigumo said the 700 lights were going to be installed in all wards.
