KAROI Town Council has said it is on the path to attain its municipal status by 2020, with various developmental projects already on course.
Town chairperson Mr Abel Matsika on Wednesday said all necessary measures were being finalised for the town to attain municipal status.
“We have a vision of becoming a municipality by 2020, so we are busy working towards achieving that vision,” he said.
“We have engaged stakeholders, particularly the business community so that they attend to their infrastructure so that our town looks more beautiful.”
Mr Matsika said the town council had gone on a drive to woo investors.
“As we speak, there is a giant retail chain which has started construction and we expect that doors would be open by December this year according to them,” he said.
“For confidentiality sake, I can’t name the company. Then we also have two tertiary institutions that are coming up simultaneously, the other one is for agriculture so that we harness the potential related to farming in Hurungwe.
“We have already engaged some other organisations that are in the process of setting up a teachers’ college in Karoi that will cater not only for Hurungwe District, but any interested parties.”
Mr Matsika said the town was setting up a complex for small to medium enterprises. “We are also putting up huge structure for SME’s so that they are housed properly as we aim to avoid the vendor chaos in our town,” he said.
“In light of that, we are making sure that we polish up grey areas that were released by the Auditor General, we are going to be assisted by the parent ministry to achieve this.”
The council is also working on recreational facilities through the construction of a townhouse along the Harare-Chirundu Highway next to the park that will form a civic centre.
