Karting fun day

ABOUT 12 youngsters had great fun at the Harare Karting Club track at Donnybrook Raceway in Harare last Sunday.
The children, aged between six and 15, and their parents spent the day learning race craft and safety on the track and practicing racing as well as team-building and having fun.
The day started with a talk on safety from the club chairman, Kevin Dufty, who then took the children and parents on a walk of the track to explain the racing line, how to overtake and the start procedure. The children then got into their karts and put in some practice laps.

After lunch, a club member, Julie Hockey, organised a game for the children so that they could learn about the various flags that are used to communicate with drivers while the race is in progress.

Finally, the children took part in two practice races which enabled them to put their new found knowledge into practice.
The Harare Karting Club prides itself on its family atmosphere and this could be seen when a few of the older children took time to teach the newcomers some racing tips.

Kart racing is one of the safest forms of motor-sport and Harare Karting Club runs races most months. To take part, you need to own your own kart and have the necessary safety gear. Karting is a sport for all ages — Harare Karting Club has members aged from six to about eighty! Races are held in groups, with the youngest being the cadets who are aged about six to eleven.

The next race is on May 18 starting from 10:30am and spectators are very welcome to come along to Donnybrook (on the Arcturus Road, just opposite the new fuel station).
