Sikhumbuzo Moyo in Binga
THE commissioning of the Kasambabezi Border Post offices and clearance wall in Binga on Friday marks another milestone in the Second Republic’s drive to promote inclusive development and unlock economic opportunities in previously marginalised communities.
Welcoming delegates to the commissioning ceremony, Matabeleland North Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Richard Moyo said the project represented far more than the completion of a Government building, describing it as a symbol of the Government’s commitment to equitable development.
“Today’s event is not only about the commissioning of this new infrastructure, but about restoring dignity and reaffirming Government’s commitment to inclusive development that leaves no one and no place behind,” he said.
Minister Moyo recalled that Vice President Kembo Mohadi presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for the project in 2020, saying its successful completion reflected the Second Republic’s determination to fulfil its development commitments.
He said Binga has historically faced significant development challenges, many of which stemmed from the displacement of communities during the construction of the Kariba Dam.
“The displacement of communities during the construction of the Kariba Dam further compounded challenges, leaving lasting effects on livelihoods and development outcomes in the district. For many years, Binga remained on the periphery of national development despite its strong human, cultural and natural resources potential,” said Minister Moyo.
He said the advent of the Second Republic under President Mnangagwa ushered in a new era of inclusive development anchored on Vision 2030, devolution and broad-based economic growth.
Minister Moyo said Binga has since witnessed notable improvements in road infrastructure, rural electrification, health and education facilities, water development projects and the expansion of social services.
He added that devolution funding has empowered local authorities to implement community-driven projects, ensuring that development priorities are determined by residents themselves.
Describing the Kasambabezi Border Post as a strategic national asset, Minister Moyo said the facility would strengthen economic relations between Zimbabwe and Zambia while creating opportunities for investment, trade and employment.
“Kasambabezi Border Post serves as a key gateway linking Zimbabwe to Zambia and regional markets. Most importantly, it will stimulate local economic activities, create employment opportunities and support livelihoods in Binga District,” he said.
The border post is expected to curb illegal and unsafe crossings that have long characterised trade across the Zambezi River, while improving revenue collection, enhancing border security and facilitating legitimate cross-border commerce.
Its commissioning forms part of the Government’s broader infrastructure modernisation programme, which seeks to improve border efficiency, promote regional integration and ensure every part of the country contributes to the attainment of Vision 2030.
