Economic Empowerment Minister Saviour Kasukuwere said the ZDF should not be left out of the empowerment programmes as they play a leading role in providing security that guarantees successful business ventures.
He said this while addressing soldiers undergoing peace and support operation training at 5 Brigade Headquarters yesterday.
Minister Kasukuwere said it was important for soldiers to know the economic value of the land to protect it against looting.
“Commanders of all military brigades around the country must know the value of the land under their jurisdiction since they are the eyes of the country,” said Minister Kasukuwere.
“Study, explore and know the minerals which are found in your area. The nation looks up to you for the security and defence of its resources. It’s high time soldiers start venturing into various business opportunities offered by the Government under the national indigenisation policy. Do not be left out, you are the ones who are guaranteeing the security of these resources, yet you do not own anything.
“Whoever said soldiers cannot be businesspeople was wrong. Come up with proposals of areas where you want to venture and Government will assist you.”
Minister Kasukuwere said Government was making frantic efforts to resuscitate distressed companies, which it will indigenise for the benefit of Zimbabweans. The minister accused some politicians in the inclusive Government of refusing to release funds which were set aside for distressed companies because of selfish reasons.
He said youths continued to benefit from the indigenisation programme with over a million dollars having been disbursed to individual youths this week alone. Minister Kasukuwere said the Government was seriously looking into the issue of foreigners who are venturing into businesses reserved for Zimbabweans with some even venturing into the retail sector that can easily be run by Zimbabweans.
