JOHANNESBURG. — Kaizer Chiefs’ Zimbabwean midfielder Willard Katsande is the Absa Premiership Player of the Month for January.
“I would like to thank my teammates,” Katsande said on receiving his prize at the South African Premier Soccer League’s offices in Johannesburg yesterday. “The international break helped us to regroup and do some team building. I think we are ready for the game on Tuesday,” he added, referring to Amakhosi’s clash with Mpumalanga Black Aces next week.
“All we need to do now is to take it one game at a time and make sure that we start enjoying our football.
“The guys have been responding very well. We need to wait for Tuesday and see how it goes.”
The hard-tackling Zimbabwean midfielder also pledged support for Chiefs coach Steve Komphela, who has come under pressure over the club’s five-game winless run and lack of silverware this season.
“We need to support the coach and help him win trophies at Kaizer Chiefs.”
Meanwhile, Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane and midfielder Hlompho Kekana have both received Absa Premiership awards.
Mosimane has been named Manager of the Month for January and February, while Kekana was named Player of the Month for February.
Sundowns registered seven victories and two draws in the league across January and February. The Brazilians, who won the Telkom Knock-out earlier in the season, currently top the standings. — KickOff.com
