JOHANNESBURG. — Kaizer Chiefs midfielder, Willard Katsande, says that the Amakhosi are being careful not to give away their plans for the season as it draws closer to starting. Katsande, 30, has been an integral part of the Glamour Boys over the past four seasons under both Stuart Baxter and Steve Komphela, and has often voiced his disappointment at the club’s underwhelming 2015-16 campaign. However, looking forward to the new season, Katsande is optimistic, and despite missing a penalty as captain in the FAME Charity Cup final against Baroka this weekend, believes that preseason is about more than results.
Speaking to Chiefs’ official website, Katsande said, “We are in a preparation phase for the start of the 2016-17 PSL season. We know that results matter every time we play, but during preseason we are testing a number of elements in the game.
“We are perfecting some of the tactics. We are also cautious not to give away much detail to the opponents at this stage of the pre-season. We are ready to kick off with the league programme. We can’t wait, because we are motivated to do well and give our supporters something to cheer about.”
Meanwhile, with regards to the teams that Chiefs have faced in preseason, the Zimbabwean skipper replied, “We are not reading much from the opponents at this stage. I am sure they too are in their preparation phase and they might conceal some of their plans. At the same time, it is a norm that our opposition always raise to the occasion when they play against us. We had a few chances against Baroka to seal the match during the regulation time. We must fix that before the start of the season.”
Chiefs’ first game of the season will see them take on last year’s runners-up, Bidvest Wits, at Bidvest Stadium on August 23rd. – Laduma
