Two families in Kahwa village in Mt Darwin South lost property and grain after their huts were torched by veld fires.
Zanu PF provincial chairperson Cde Kazembe Kazembe visited the affected families to comfort them and rendered assistance.
So far, 32 fire incidents have been recorded in the province, while 159 tickets and 117 environmental protection orders were issued.
“Our President is always telling us that we must be with the people all the time even when they are facing problems,” said Cde Kazembe.
“I came to visit the families to see the challenges they are facing and understand what caused the fire. We urge people to stop starting unnecessary fires.
“Veld fires affect people and lead to loss of life. I came here to have first-hand information. The two families lost everything and we have managed to put together some resources, including cement, blankets and money and they will start income generating projects.
“We are glad that no life was lost, we heard that a toddler who was sleeping in the house was saved. They can start poultry projects to get back on their feet and rebuild their lives.”
Mt Darwin South MP Stephen Kabozo said veld fires have become a headache for the district and they are raising awareness in the communities against starting unnecessary fires.
“In Parliament we are lobbying for an increase of the penalty for people found guilty of starting fires. This will act as a deterrent measure because veld fires have devastating effects on people, some lose property while others lose life,” he said.
