THE story of the five police officers, who are in trouble after they were trapped, and then arrested, for demanding a US$5 bribe from a truck driver in Harare, was widely covered in the local daily newspapers yesterday.
We made it our main story of the day.
We broke down the US$5 bribe and picked out that each of the cops was set to get US$1 each in the event that their illegal operation had come to fruition.
The five cops — Dennis Tafadzwa Chivaku, Freeway Muninipi, Givemore Mucheka, Sharon Madondo and Getrude Ndenga — were trapped by other police officers and were nabbed in Ruwa.
They were arrested after receiving a US$5 bribe from a truck driver, who is involved in the illegal sand poaching business, after a trap had been set by fellow police officers.
The five cops appeared before Harare Magistrate Marewanazvo Gofa on Tuesday.
The five police officers are all attached to a Harare East DHQ operation coded named “NO TO ILLEGAL SAND POACHING.”
It is alleged that last month, the truck driver filed a report at Police Headquarters Internal investigations that there were members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police in Ruwa area who were demanding money from truck drivers who were poaching sand in the area.
On Monday, members of the PGHQ internal Investigations set a trap and managed to arrest the rogue cops, who were involved in this dirty scheme.
The police operation saw the cops going to Sunway City in Ruwa where the rogue gang was conducting its operations.
We made it our main story because we felt that the arrest of these rogue cops was a very important development in the country’s fight against corruption within our police force.
The police force is a very key pillar of our country.
Without it, there would be lawlessness everywhere and our lives, would be very different.
It means thieves and robbers would attack us, as and when they feel like, without any fear of the repercussions that come with being arrested for their illegal activities.
That is why it is important to have a police force that is upright and why it is also important that all the rotten apples should be removed.
These are the kind of rogue cops who will leave a faulty bus passing a check point even though they know that doing so might result in the mass loss of lives.
These are the kind of rogue cops who will turn a blind eye to illegal activities in their area of policing because those conducting such activities will be paying them bribes.
These are not the kind of police officers we want in this country.
We also have to thank the upright cops who decided to take on and arrest their rogue colleagues.
This shows that we still have many good cops and, for us, that is a refreshing thing.
