Keeping one’s hair straight

Hello, there everyone. Hope you are all well. Well we have begun the year some of us entered drunk, others sorrowful, others happy and others did not even know when the New Year began, they just found themselves there. Me I’m embarrassed to say I was on a movie binge so after praying into the New Year, we watched movies all the way into the early hours of the morning how funny!

So I am answering my first letter for 2015 today and that is from Lisa who says “ Anastasia how do you keep your hair straight? I constantly go to the hairdresser to get my hair done but they do not make it look like those actresses etc we see on TV. And is the Flat iron the way to go?

Hi there Lisa, thanks for your letter dear. Firstly it is a great mistake for us to look at those famous people and think that it is all real or that it is easy. Those people have thousands and thousands of dollars so they can have everything done to their hair to make it look as great and amazing as it does. But also not all of them have natural hair that looks like that. Many of them wear lace wigs and others wear plain old Brazilian weaves ors similar. Yes it all costs money.

But of cause I have a few tricks up my sleeve to answer your question about making the hair straight and I guess healthy looking. For glamorous of amazing hair every woman needs to have a flat iron, hair oil or moisturise a good shampoo and conditioner and regular wash. I will also throw in a tip or two to help your hair grow. So Here we go. . .

Flat iron hair

I use a flat iron at least once a week and then if necessary do the tips here and there if the rain frizzes my hair. So I use heat protector oil or moisturiser. If you have black hair your hair is not strong enough to contain the heat, so it will dry and or burn off.

Moisturise

I Moisturise and seal my ends of hair each night. Yes this means curls etc won’t stay. But it’s important. Remember your ends are the oldest parts of your hair so they cannot look after themselves as well as the root. So help the ends out.

Massage scalp

Your blood needs to flow throughout your scalp to help your hair grow. So it is necessary once or twice a week to massage your scalp.

Chemicals

Limit the amount of chemicals in your hair, but if you are relaxing stick to the time frame it says, no less or no more. Any chemical will do some form of damage each time you use it. I will say if you do not want to go natural that’s fine don’t let people label you. They say do your hair every 6 weeks. This may not work for some people, but they say that for a reason. Most of you who do not relax your hair on time will find that it starts to break unless you have a protective hairstyle.

Protective hairstyles

This is where you make your hair sit under some protective hairstyles so that there is less wear and tear on your natural hair for weeks or months at a time. So you can put wigs (I am not a fan of non lace wigs because they sit on your hairline which breaks off the hairline. So lace wigs sit on your forehead there’s no hair to break there. But my favourite is weaves but not the whole head. Anything that needs your hairline is out for me, maybe because I have stitches on the one side of my hairline and as much as the rest of my hair is growing several centimeters a month, my hairline is doing that only per year, so I do not have the luxury of being able to pull my hair fully back in a ponytail because there is always some cruel person out there who says “oh your hairline is gone or shame too many weaves broke your hairline or something” – then I have to kindly and gently say “no I have stitches there”. . . mmmmm ka boom!” the silence thereafter is deathly.

So yes I know how unforgiving the public are when it comes to no or thin hairlines and I know how painstakingly slow it is to re grow. And the thing is – it never grows back as thick as the rest of the hair. So please be extra careful. But it is better if you are trying to grow your hair to weave a full head of hair. My hair is passed my shoulders into my back so I do not feel the need to put a weave on the whole head; only where I need thickness.

Bad habits

Flat Ironing every day is a NO NO NO. I flat iron my hair once per week. If I have to do it more, its because I have to go to a function and it needs to look neater or I might have gotten rained on so my hair is not in good shape. Flat ironing people is not a permanent thing. If you want curls do the curler thing it makes better curls and they stay longer if you use a hair spray. If you want it straight, rather oil it and comb it back and tie it over night or even swirl it and cover it in a head net over night. That’s is what I do and it is the best straight style method ever.

Wrong oil – Vaseline is bad news on hair that is relaxed it is too thick and blocks the pores. Your hair needs to breathe.

Hot oil treatment once a month — it opens the pores and allows moisture to get in.

Moisturise the hair

Find a moisturizer with water or it will say Aqua. There is a difference between moisturiser or oil. So products are a major issue, be careful. The brand name for me matter not unless you have sensitive scalp, then be careful. Just find the right product for your hair,

What works on my hair may not work on your hair and what works on yours may not work on mine. And remember everyones hair journey is not the same, the average hair growth is 6 inches to 12 inches a year, but I know some people who can only grow their hair 2 inches and others who grow their 18 inches. All I know is that every ones hair can grow, you just need to know what your hair needs and give it that.

What every hair needs

Vitamins, Moisture, water, and gentle care.

Avocado oil and olive oil is wonderful for your hair especially if you have naturally tight curled or kinky hair.

Okay so that’s it from me this week. Next week we will touch on how to make your hair grow. God bless!
